Alphonse UWORWABAYEHO is senior lecturer in educationat the University of Rwanda-College of Education (UR-CE). He obtained his PhD in Mathematics Education, specializing on integration of ICT in the teaching and learning of mathematics from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom. As part of professional development, he holds a certificate of successful completion with honors on Mainstreaming Early Childhood Education into Education Sector Planning organized by the IIEP-UNESCO/UNICEF/GPE/MOOC. Currently, he is leading the Department of Early Childhood and Primary Education. He is an associate member of African Centre of Excellence for Innovative Teaching and Learning Mathematics and Science (ACEITLMS) based at the UR-CE.He is also coordinating activities related to (i) the implementation of competence based teaching approaches at URCE under the ‘Leaders in Teaching Initiative’ and (ii) continuous professional development (CPD) on school leadership for school leaders, coaching and mentoring for primary and secondary school educators.His research interest lies in integration of ICT in teaching mathematics and teacher professional development on enhancing active teaching learning. To date, he is principal investigator on the research project entitled ‘ Improving learning outcomes in secondary school science and mathematics through language supportive pedagogy’ funded by the ACEITLMS and co-principal investigator on ‘ Exploring the opportunities for learning justice : a case study of girls’ educational experiences in English medium Rwandan basic education’ funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

In the past, he was a member of EdQual (Research Programme Consortium on implementing education quality in low-income countries) (www.edqual.org) . This was a five years DfID-funded project involving six academic institutions. Within EdQual Alphonse played the role of lead researcher as well as institution leader at the same doing PhD programme. Prior to join higher institution of education in March 2003, Alphonse was a secondary school mathematics teacher for about 16 years.
