Biography
Dr. Leon Niyibizi, Head of the Department of Aquaculture & Fisheries
at the University of Rwanda (2024-2025), has served as a lecturer and
researcher since 2009. He holds a PhD in Animal Science (Animal Nutrition &
Management) and has extensive experience in livestock production, aquaculture
systems, and fisheries management.
His teaching spans BSc and MSc programs in animal production and
aquaculture and fisheries, covering nutrition and feeding systems, housing and
biosecurity, breeding efficiency, environmental stewardship, and animal
welfare. He has supervised over 30 undergraduate and postgraduate theses and
contributed to curriculum development boards and recruitment committees.
Leon’s research focuses on feed innovation, ecosystem monitoring, and
farmer capacity development. He co-investigated the NCST Carp Fish Project,
advancing carp domestication and low-cost feed technologies, and conducted
long-term ecosystem studies of Lake Kivu in collaboration with international
partners (ECOSIKI, EAWAG, EAGLES).
As founding Head of Department, he spearheaded the creation of the BSc
program in Aquaculture & Fisheries Management, now validated by the Higher
Education Council, and initiated the development of the MSc program.
Through structured training programs and advisory work with farmers,
Leon has bridged academic research with practical innovation, strengthening
Rwanda’s aquaculture and livestock sectors.
